Yi Ling Tsai
Data and Advanced Analytics Trainee, IBM
- It was clear to me early on that I wanted to work abroad, but I wanted to take my education in Norway. Therefore, it was important to me to find an international recognized school that could offer a management program in English. I wanted to be part of a class with different nationalities, and have exciting exchange opportunities.
A semester in Kazakhstan
Ling had three criteria when she considered her exchange opportunities at BI. She wanted to go far out of her comfort zone, learn a new language in a country where English is not widespread and to go to a place she would never go on vacation. The choice fell on Almaty, Kazakhstan.
During my exchange semester, I experienced Asia in a unique way.
Ling learned Russian, and traveled around central Asia and became acquainted with the locals.
-These unique experiences have given me a deeper understanding of foreign cultures and diplomacy. This will be a great benefit for me in an international work environment.
After graduating, she moved to the Netherlands to take a master’s degree and got a job at IBM in Groningen. Ling is having a great time in the young and dynamic work environment at one of the largest tech companies in the world.
- We have a typical IT business atmosphere where there is as much focus on having fun at work as it is on working hard. It is common to see my colleagues play table football, having nerf-gun competitions or sit on the swings around the office, says Ling.
At IBM Ling solves practical problems by structuring data to reveal trends and traces in datasets. Ling has also analyzed the frequency for data and telephone use among customers of a telecom company. The analysis helped the telecom company to optimize their package deals.
